The People's Festivities of Campo Maior (Portugal), are in the process to be classified as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, by UNESCO.
The celebrations only take place when the population of the village wants and is recognized internationally for its "originality and popular character", The inhabitants prepare for months, the ornamentation of the streets.
As well as so many other towns in the still unspoiled Alentejo, Campo Maior is a tranquil and peaceful town in the center / south of Portugal located very close to the Spanish border. A willful determination of neighbors organised by streets and in competition between each other, leads to the consummation of 20 ton of paper in an unique and magnificent flower festival, compound by both: natural and paper flowers. Campo Maior population are famous for their character. A few months before the event, when everybody's wishes coincide, a gorgeous colored festival named the Festa das Flores (Flower Festival), also known as the Festa do Povo (Festival of the People) is getting alive here. This is when each street residents get together to decorate their neighborhood with paper flowers in joyful and brightly-colored compositions.
